When the words fashion accessories are heard, handbags, jewellery and scarves are often the first associations that come to mind. The first couple of associations are not directly related to men’s fashion accessories besides the casual tie.
However, male accessories have often dominated the runways and complimented men’s wear in a way that has been undeniable. Sometimes these accessories have awe effects, a sense of amazement or even leave audiences shocked as runway shows tend to bring past fashion trends back. And the traditional bowtie is no exception.
The Stereotype of Bowties
Bowties have a stereotype that tends to hover over anyone who has worn bowties regularly. Although older politicians have been famous for proudly wearing bowties, and university professors define what the bowtie has been all about for centuries. However, bowties are no longer restricted to these stereotypes, as this fashion accessory has been spotted on runways around the world.
Although the tie has always been a favourite amongst male accessories, the bowtie should not be forgotten. While the skinny tie has made a brief appearance, the bowties clearly pushes the skinny tie completely off the international runways. The bowtie has become the newest and hottest accessory for men.
Fashion Designers and Bowties
The bowtie is not limited to a suit or tuxedo. A bowtie can add personality and spunk to a casual outfit that consists of jeans and a button up shirt, while it can also add a sophisticated touch to a more formal wear. The versatility of the bowtie allows it to be a cool and relaxed fashion accessory, but also one that promotes a trendy and hip look for a younger generation.
Male accessory designers and fashion designers are being more playful and articulate with bowties. Christopher Sherman, for example, is a proud bowtie designer, whose work has made appearances on international runways worldwide. From his designs, one can conclude that he aims to show that bowties should not be considered a stereotypical accessory.
He even designs bowties for women by placing small bowties on hairclips, belts and purses. While it has traditionally only been considered an accessory for men, designers are now breaking the barrier. Women are now included in promoting this traditional accessory.
Designers and models around the world are often spotted trying to break the ideas associated with the traditional bowtie. This is often done by letting the younger generation represent new fashion ideas and trends. Although it may take a while before the younger generation catches on to the trends of the international runways, the stereotypes that are attached to bowties clearly needs to be redefined.
